One economic report tonight could shape the market's next major move.
For weeks, investors have debated whether the U.S. economy is cooling enough to convince the Federal Reserve to begin cutting interest rates. Tonight's Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report may provide the clearest answer yet.
A weaker-than-expected ADP employment report has already lowered expectations to around 70,000–80,000 new jobs—the softest forecast of the year. However, there's an important contradiction: initial jobless claims have remained below 200,000 for three consecutive weeks, suggesting that while hiring is slowing, employers are still holding on to workers.
That makes tonight's payroll data especially significant.
If the report comes in below expectations, it could reinforce the case for Fed rate cuts, potentially weakening the U.S. dollar while supporting assets like gold and Bitcoin. On the other hand, a stronger-than-expected reading could revive inflation concerns, push Treasury yields higher, and weigh on stocks and other risk assets.
With so much riding on a single release, markets are already positioning for heightened volatility ahead of the announcement.
